Weekend Escape to Abuja – A Travelstart Nigeria Adventure

Weekend jaunts are always a good idea. Even more so when you get to make them with amazing people. As I mentioned in this post, I got a chance to explore Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja with Travelstart Nigeria and my friends, Fola of Folaswaka, Lola of Unravelling Nigeria and Mofe of Naija Nomads.

We had 24 hours to see as much as we could in the city, so we channelled our inner James Williams – you know, the host of CNN’s ‘In 24 hours’ – and hit the ground running as soon as we dropped our bags. Our first stop was Magicland Abuja – an amusement park located within the city. We arrived early and were practically the first ones in. We had the park to ourselves giving us a perfect opportunity to let our goofy sides out!

After our stop at the park, we headed to the Nigerian National Mosque and the National Church of Nigeria. The simple, yet the elegant architecture of these buildings were a pleasant surprise. I was equally impressed with the reception and tours we were given. For the mosque, a security guard took us around the building. Even though he didn’t quite say anything about it, we were glad to have a tour none the less.

Abuja National Mosquetravelstart abujaThe reverse was the case at the National Church as our guide was so enthusiastic to tell us every single detail about it! It was generally a good tour and by the time we were done, we were all famished. So we hit a local fast food restaurant for a quick lunch before we continued our tour through the city.

national church abujaAfter lunch, we attempted to get to the National Assembly. I say ‘attempted’ because we were prevented from getting anywhere close to it. Apparently, you need to write to the senate and wait a period of 2 weeks to get an authorization to visit.

As we didn’t have any letter, we packed our load and headed to the National Children Park and Zoo, Abuja. The zoo was a bit empty, save for a few animals. So don’t go expecting to see any of the big 5. Actually, scratch that, they had a huge buffalo.

Have you visited Abuja before, or do you currently live there? What would be your itinerary if you had only 24 hours to see the city?

  1. Hi. Wanted to know what mode of transport you guys used to get round. I’m due to have 4 days on my own in Abuja and wanted to know how to safely get by alone.

    1. Hi Abi, we had a bus to take us around during our visit. I think you should be fine with Uber or Taxify in Abuja.

  2. Awwwww, the only time I went to Abuja was for a school trip, where we were kept (in another school) for three days, so no adventure there.
I do plan on going to Abuja really soon, I can’t believe you were able to do all these in one day, looks so fun! In 24 hours, i would Really want to see the church and mosque, looks stunning. Also, go to the Arts and Crafts Market too!
The National Assembly though… Na wa oh

    1. It was a lot for a day but it was fun. When you get to visit, maybe plan to split these into 2 or 3 days. You could easily spend an entire afternoon picnicking at the Millennium Park. The Church and Mosque are close by and easy to visit within an hour or so…

    1. We had a great time indeed! And I agree, Abuja is really beautiful. After only just popping in and out in the past, I had a little more time to appreciate the city more this time around.

      Thanks for stopping by Tokoni.

  3. That looks like such a great adventure with the girls.
And omg that mosque looks beautiful, I love the details.
Particularly impressed that you all were able to get in. I’ve heard stories about it being prohibited.
Looks like 24 hours was very well spent. 🙂

    1. Thanks Ufuoma. It was really a fun time with the girls. As for the mosque, I didn’t even know about it being prohibited or not but our contact in Abuja (Amadi of sagetravels.com) worked his magic while we waited, so big thanks to him.

I love to hear from you, Leave a comment here!

This is one of the greatest travel hacks for all my 9-5 people who love to explore! 🪐

This year, while working full time, I travelled to a new place each month, visiting local, regional and international destinations - including a 25-day trip to Japan! 🤯

How did I do it? I stacked my PTO, weekends and public holidays to maximise my vacation days! And now, I'm giving you my blueprint and travel planning strategy 💙

These are some suggestions but feel FREE to mix and match according to your preference! Happy Travels! 🪐

OGs will remember that I started my travel blogging journey by taking a 3-day road trip across 3 countries in 2018 for less than $40! Those were the good days!🥹

I don't think that's possible anymore but if you're looking to make 2026 your year of travel, despite your budget, I've got tips for you! Maybe you're a new traveller looking to explore more or build a robust travel history, here are some places to start!

🌸 I always recommend starting with what you have, from where you are. If you're travelling from Lagos, for example - the starting point of the places listed here - you can try exploring your neighbourhood first, before venturing to other states and neighbouring countries.

➕️ A trip combination in the region is worth it. For example, you can do a road trip from Nigeria to Ghana or even IVC, stopping in Benin and Togo along the way!

🐚 Make use of layovers: for example, you can book a trip to Rwanda via Kenya Airways and stay a night or two in Nairobi. These two countries are visa free for Nigerians, so they're perfect. I do recommend spending more time in both places though but if you're on a time or money budget, this is an option.

⏰️ Timing matters. Research and book tickets off peak seasons to get the best deals available!

On this page and on my blog, I share relevant travel information to help you plan your trip, regardless of your budget! So stick around to learn more!

Share this with your spouses and partners, and follow me for more marital advice!

Studies have shown 👩🏽‍🎓 that soft life is a mandatory requirement for wives everywhere. Marrying a professionally relaxed wife brings blessings, not just one blessing, but many blessings to your home 🙇🏾‍♀️

And the church said what? 🔊

March and April are peak months in Japan but it is still possible to experience the beauty of the country without feeling overwhelmed. Here's how:

⏰️: If you want to stick the main tourist loop, try going in early March. The weather is still a bit cooler but it's beginning to warm up and many places will be less crowded compared to when cherry blossoms begin to bloom. You might also catch some early blossoms too 🌸

🐦: Become an early bird or a night owl. Many places are considerably less crowded in the mornings and at night.

🐚: Travel slow. Skip the day trip if you can and stay overnight. It gives you the chance to experience places relatively quieter before day trippers arrive and long after they've left.

🚧 Go off the beaten path: where you don't need to get up at 4am. The streets are quiet all day long!

🥾: Go hiking or cycling: for less crowded spaces and beautiful nature.

As you plan your 2026 adventures, be mindful. be respectful. be responsible. Happy Travels!

In an age where the predominant message is to quit your job to travel the world, I'm here to tell you that you don't have to!

It's okay to work a job you love and travel when you can

It's okay if travel is only just a hobby

It's okay to find a balance that works for YOU

It's okay to post about that one trip all year long - I do it and will continue to do it!

Do you and enjoy your life the way you have designed it!💙

And I couldn't get enough of this gorgeous mountain!

I saved a visit to the Fuji Five Lakes area for my second trip to Japan - and spent 3 nights in the area. Mount Fuji was clear and visible throughout our stay! Morning, afternoon and evening!

It was phenomenal! I read that Fuji-san is only visible about 80 days of the year. I guess we were lucky to have this majestic view for 4 consecutive days!
