If you search online for the best day trips from Nairobi, you may come across suggestions that include places like Amboseli, Nanyuki, and Nakuru. While these are remarkable destinations in Kenya, most are not ideal for a day trip—especially if you’re visiting the country for the first time.
I’ve also written about some of the best weekend getaways close to Nairobi, which include these destinations. However, this article will focus on true day trips from Nairobi—not places that can technically be visited in a day, but only if you really push it.

In my opinion, the best day trips from Nairobi are the ones that are within 1-2 hour’s drive of the city’s main hubs. The first on this list are the easy-to-reach destinations including Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Centre and Elephant Orphanage.

1. Nairobi National Park
Just a stone’s throw away from the city centre, this unique wildlife reserve allows you to witness a remarkable array of animals, including lions, rhinos, giraffes, and zebras, against Nairobi’s iconic skyline.

The best time to visit this park is during the dry seasons, generally from December to March and June to October. If you want the best animal viewing experience, you need an early wake-up call. Most people say evening drives are great as well.
2. Giraffe Centre and Elephant Orphanage
The Giraffe Centre and Elephant Orphanage can be combined to make a day trip in the city. You only need a few hours in both places and if you start your day out early, you can combine your visit with a stop at the National Park. For more ideas, check out my detailed 24-hour Nairobi itinerary here.

Remember that due to a recent update, you need to pay the National Park fees to be able to visit the Elephant Orphanage. Therefore, it makes sense to combine both places if you can.

3. Kiambethu Tea Farm
Kenya is one of the world’s leading producers of tea, so it’s only fitting that a tea farm makes for one of the best day trips from Nairobi.

Kiambethu Tea Farm is one of the tea farms in Kenya that organises tours. During the tour, you can learn all about tea farming and production. It’s a fun and easy way to explore the Tigoni and Limuru areas, and the drive there is a highlight in itself as you pass by beautiful fields of plantations.
4. Ngong Hills
Ngong Hills makes for the perfect day trip out of Nairobi; you can spend the day hiking the hills and then enjoy a picnic afterwards.

It’s one of my favourite green spaces in Nairobi, second only to Karura Forest. But be aware: if you plan to hike past three of these hills — I believe there are seven of them in total — it is highly recommended that you hire the services of a KWS guide at the entrance.

5. Naivasha
While Naivasha is technically reachable in a day, I strongly recommend making it a weekend or overnight destination. The area offers such a rich variety of activities that rushing through in a day would do it a disservice, especially if you are visiting for the first time.

Taking your time allows you to fully immerse yourself in the region’s natural beauty, spot more wildlife, and truly unwind from city life. Plus, the selection of lodges and camps along the lake’s shore makes for a perfect getaway from Nairobi’s hustle and bustle.
That being said, if you do decide to make a day trip to Naivasha, I recommend focusing on just two activities at most. Some good combinations include:
- Taking a boat trip on Lake Naivasha combined with visiting Crescent Island
- Exploring Hell’s Gate National Park (perfect for cycling and wildlife viewing)
- Hiking Mount Longonot (which can take 4-5 hours on its own)

Trying to squeeze in more than two activities would mean rushing through each one. Remember that the drive from Nairobi to Naivasha takes about 2 hours each way, so you’ll want to make the most of your time there by choosing your activities wisely.

6. The Forest
The Forest is a recreational centre located about one hour away from Nairobi. The centre claims to have the longest zipline in East Africa. This is usually the highlight of a visit there.

In addition to ziplining, the centre also offers activities such as paintballing, horse riding, archery, mountain biking and hiking. It is open every week from Thursday to Sunday and on public holidays.
7. Pick your Hiking Adventure!
If you enjoy hiking, you will find several hiking trails within an hour from Nairobi. Places like Ololosokuan Nature Trail, Tigoni and Mount Kilimambogo (Oldonyo Sabuk) offer diverse hiking experiences for all skill levels.

If you plan to go hiking in these places, I recommend going in the company of a group or tour guide, and you will find several companies that organize weekly hikes out of Nairobi.

Tips to Make a Great Day Trip from Nairobi
- Start Early: Nairobi traffic can be unpredictable, so leaving early helps you maximize your day and avoid the worst congestion.
- Check the Weather: Kenya’s weather can change quickly, especially during the rainy seasons. Always check the forecast and pack accordingly.
- Book in Advance: Popular attractions like the Elephant Orphanage have specific visiting hours, and some tea farms require advance reservations. Plan ahead to avoid disappointment.
- Bring Cash or get a SIM Card with Safaricom for MPESA: While many places accept cards and MPESA, it’s always good to have cash for entrance fees, local guides, and small purchases in more remote areas.
- Consider Transportation: Whether you are hiring a driver, using a tour service, or driving yourself, ensure your transportation is arranged beforehand. Uber, Bolts and public transportation including boda-bodas (motorcyles) and mataus (buses) are options to get around too.
- Pack Essentials: Don’t forget to bring water, snacks, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes. If you’re visiting wildlife areas, neutral-coloured clothing is recommended.
- Local Timing: Be mindful of closing times and peak hours. For instance, the Elephant Orphanage has specific feeding times, and some attractions like Karura Forest have last entry times.

Remember that while these destinations are close to Nairobi, each offers a unique perspective on Kenya’s diverse natural and cultural heritage. Whether you’re interested in wildlife, adventure, culture, or just a peaceful day in nature, these day trips provide excellent opportunities to explore beyond the city limits while ensuring you’re back in Nairobi by evening.

Nairobi is a cool city but what makes it magical is its proximity to nature. I’d love to visit the Forest Ziplining where zip lines whizz over trees and through a forest where you can ride horses, paintball, ride bikes or take a walk. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
Thanks, Aiva! Nairobi’s proximity to exciting day and weekend trips make the city even more wonderful!
