Nigerian citizens need a visa to visit Hong Kong, and in this post, I’ll detail the requirements and application process. I’ll also discuss how to apply for this visa online and some important information you need to know.
PS: I encourage you to check the Hong Kong Immigration Department’s website for updated information about the visa application process. All information presented in this post is correct at the time of this writing. They are subject to change without notice. Always confirm travel details and requirements with respective embassies & airlines before you apply or travel.

I first learned that Nigerians could apply for an evisa to Hong Kong via Muna of Travelletters. A simple flight search became an unexpected travel opportunity when I discovered I could save hundreds of dollars by routing my Tokyo and Seoul flights through Hong Kong. What started as a budget-conscious decision quickly evolved into an exciting chance to add another destination to my Asian itinerary.

How to Apply for a Hong Kong Visit Visa
The process of applying for a visa is straightforward. Applicants need to put the Hong Kong visa requirements documentation together and submit them online at this address.

Hong Kong Visa Requirements for Nigerian Citizens
The documents needed for your visa application include, but are not limited to the below:
- A valid passport (biodata page) with a minimum of two blank visa pages and at least six months’ validity beyond your intended stay.
- Recently taken passport-size photos (40mm x 50mm, colour) taken against a white background. These must be taken within the last three months
- Photocopy of your passport’s bio-data page and all pages containing visas and immigration stamps. In my experience, it’s better to include all used pages to show your travel history.
- Proof of the applicant’s financial standing, e.g. bank statements, savings account passbooks, tax receipts, etc. and proof of employment (if any), e.g. company leave letter, salary slips, etc.
- Proof of transportation arrangement, e.g. flight itinerary
- Proof of the proposed leisure visit to Hong Kong – Get my 2-day Hong Kong itinerary here
- Proof of the proposed visit to the next destination after visiting Hong Kong, itinerary, etc. (for transit)
- Proof of the proposed business visit to Hong Kong, e.g. letter issued by the applicant’s employing company to confirm his/her proposed business activities in Hong Kong, an invitation letter issued by a local company, a letter issued by a trade body to confirm the applicant’s attendance at trade fairs and exhibitions, etc. (for business visit)
- Proof of relationship with the local sponsor (for family visit)
- Proof of the proposed visit to Hong Kong (for purposes of visit other than leisure, transit, business or family visit)

There is a section to include other supporting documents. Here are some additional documents that can go into this section
- A detailed cover letter – Get my sample cover letter here
- Travel Journal – I included a pdf with some photos from my recent trip. I forgot to include my valid visas to the USA, Canada and the UK. If you have these, be sure to include them as well. You may also include this using the supplementary document link.
- For employees: An original letter from your employer on company letterhead
- For business owners: Business registration certificates and company incorporation documents

Where to Submit Your Hong Kong Tourist Visa Application
Luckily, the whole process for this visa application is done online on the Gov.HK website. After submission, it may take a few days to get an acknowledgement email from the Immigration Department. I submitted my application on a Saturday and received the acknowledgement email the following Wednesday.
Hong Kong Tourist Visa Processing Time
From the time of the acknowledgement email to the time I received my visa was 8 weeks. The standard processing time is about 4-6 weeks. I’ve read that some applicants get it processed faster (2 weeks is the fastest I’ve seen), while others get it later than 6 weeks. I recommend applying at least 2 months before your intended travel date as applications can sometimes take longer during peak seasons or holidays.

Hong Kong Visit Visa Fees
The cost of an ordinary visa is $230 (HKD) which is about $30 (USD). If you are simply passing through, then a transit visa is required and this costs $120 (HKD).
Tracking Your Application
You can track your visa application status online through the Hong Kong Immigration Department’s website. You’ll need your application reference number, which you receive upon submission.
What to Do If Your Application is Delayed
As my travel date grew closer, I wondered whether I’d get my visa processed in time. When I did not hear a response on the 6th week, I sent an email to this address: [email protected] and called this number twice: (852) 2824 6111 to follow up. I got my visa 4 days after my email and a day after the second call.

My pleasure! 🙂
This is such an informative and useful post with so many smart tips. Latvians don’t need a visa to travel to Hong Kong as I can travel to the destination for a limited stay, but it is always a good idea to check other entry requirements and how long I can stay for. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
Thanks, Aiva! I am hoping for a day when the world opens up more to Nigerian travellers. Until then, we need to be hyper aware about the requirements to visit each destination. But I do agree with you, every traveller needs to stay updated before each trip as conditions could vary per nationality.
