While planning our Namibian adventure, I stumbled upon a hidden gem nestled on the outskirts of Windhoek, the country’s vibrant capital. This charming guesthouse instantly captured my imagination. Eager to secure our stay for our May trip, I fired off an email inquiry, my fingers crossed for good news.
To my dismay, the response came swiftly: fully booked until next year! The popularity of this unique retreat had clearly preceded it and perhaps this “hidden gem” was not quite hidden after all. Feeling quite hopeful, I asked to be added to a waitlist, and would you know it, a spot for one night opened up on my birthday!
It was a birthday miracle! Sometimes, it seems, good things really do come to those who wait…and persistently refresh their email. 🙂
One Night in Windhoek City Centre…
Because our dream of a two-night stay at Voigtland didn’t quite materialize, we pivoted to embrace a night in the city centre before our time at the guesthouse. Our accommodation here was a gem in its own right, offering a vibrant taste of Namibian hospitality.
It was also a walking distance to malls and shops and a short drive to restaurants in the city.
After checking out the next day, we picked up our rental car in town and drove to Voigtland Guesthouse.
Staying at the Most Charming Guesthouse in Windhoek
The main draw of staying in this charming guesthouse is the opportunity to interact with its resident wild giraffes. These gentle giants are my favourite wildlife, and it was for this reason alone, that I chose this accommodation.
However, Voigtland Guesthouse proved to be much more than a giraffe sanctuary. The property was stunning and vast. Acres of pristine savanna stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with majestic acacia trees.
We received a warm welcome from the hosts and to our delight, they informed us that our room was ready hours ahead of the official check-in time.
After settling in, we proceeded to tour the grounds before lunch. We walked over to the pool area and though it looked quite inviting, the cold winter weather kept us from taking a plunge. I imagine summer swims here will be delightful though!
Later, we walked over to the farm area and got acquainted with other animals on the property…
And then, it was time for lunch. Because Voigtland Guesthouse is located in a fairly remote area, we had all our meals in-house. Lunch was a choice between pasta with bolognese sauce and couscous; we went with the former and it was one of the best meals I had the entire holiday!
Then came the highlight of our stay – the afternoon high tea with the giraffes. During this interaction, the staff provided us with naturally growing acacia fruits to feed the giraffes. We all took turns doing so before settling down for tea and cakes, while the giraffes roamed freely around the deck.
High Tea with Giraffes
Our encounter with these charming creatures was nothing short of magical – after all, it’s not every day you find yourself exchanging glances with a curious giraffe. However, even in this animal lover’s paradise, Mother Nature had her plans of her own.
The Namibian sun, ever so fierce, beat down relentlessly, threatening to turn our delightful midday experience into a sweltering ordeal. Luckily, Mark and the staff organized a do-over to celebrate my birthday the next morning on the deck with the giraffes and perfect weather conditions!
In the evening, while Mark went for a run around the property, and other guests, for a sundowner, I remained on the deck, drink in hand, watching a most gorgeous sunset. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the day but the day was not quite over yet.
We reconvened in the dining room for a 4-course set dinner consisting of kudu and oryx meat. The previous night, we had dined at Joe’s Beerhouse and had seen a wide variety of game meat on the menu, so it was not shocking to have this served to us at Voigtland Guesthouse.

The meals were equally delicious and served generously, although I generally preferred what I had for lunch.
After our hearty dinner, it was time to retire for the evening. We returned to our room and enjoyed a quiet and peaceful sleep until the next morning.
Voigtland Guesthouse Farm…
The next morning, we awoke with the sun to tour the farm grounds once more before breakfast and our departure.
Then we went over to the deck for breakfast. This time, the staff had prepared the area for us alone. I don’t know if the breakfast with giraffes is usually set aside for guests celebrating special occasions, but I felt touched they obliged Mark’s request to set it up for us.
Breakfast with Giraffes at Voigtland Guesthouse
In addition to our breakfast being served on the deck, the staff brought a cake over and sang me a happy birthday song. It was a well-appreciated gesture and their hospitality set the tone for the rest of our trip…
We checked out shortly after breakfast and bid farewell to the most charming guesthouse in Windhoek!
