Travel with a Book: Becoming Odyssa by Jennifer Pharr Davis

Travel with a Book is a bi-weekly travel book recommendation publication by Mark. This week’s recommendation is Becoming Odyssa by Jennifer Pharr Davis

———

In 2018, I spent five months hiking the Appalachian Trail, a 3,200 km trail that runs from Maine to Georgia. I had a kindle with me the entire time so I could read in my tent at night.

There’s a lot of books about the Appalachian Trail. It’s one of those terrifyingly difficult but beautiful experiences that make you want to write a book after you get through it. The most popular (and my least favourite) is Bill Bryson’s Walk in the Woods. Less popular, but definitely one of my favourites, Is Jennifer Pharr Davis’ Becoming Odyssa.

Just after graduating college, the burning flame of wanderlust led her to Springer Mountain in Georgia, the beginning of the Appalachian Trail. Her friends and family thought she was crazy. Once the wanderlust died down and the adversity seemed impossible, she started to think she was crazy too.

She not only finished hiking the entire trail, 6 years later in 2011, but she also hiked it again and set the fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail completing it in 46 days.

The book is less about hiking than it is about self-discovery and “learning to smile and laugh just for me, even if no one else was around”. If you’re an inspiring female solo traveller, this book will fill you with the courage to take the first step.

A quote from Becoming Odyssa:

“In college, we had a class discussion about whether the tale of Odysseus taking ten years to return home in the midst of magic, gods, distraction, and disaster could be a real story. I was the only one in the class who thought it was possible. Now it all made sense. I had just spent the past four months travelling a 2,175-mile footpath. And during that time, I had been struck by lightning and caught in a blizzard. I met a pirate, escaped a stalker, and encountered illegal drugs. I walked with a moose, avoided serpents of supernatural size, and fought with dark armies (of bugs).

I suffered unexplained ailments, underwent spells of fatigue, and was rescued countless times by complete strangers. My best friend was a travelling comedian and minstrel, and I happily took part in a romantic subplot with a mysterious and handsome man. I had been met by a higher power Who guided me along the path, and even when I came face to face with death, I continued to seek out life.”

    1. Thanks, Emmanuel and thanks to Mark for recommending it too. That quote certainly inspires me to push the boundaries of solo travel more but hike the Appalachian Trail? I don’t know!

Dreaming of visiting Hong Kong? 🇭🇰 If so, you're in luck because the visa application is one of the easiest (and cheapest) out there for Nigerian passport holders.⁣
⁣
💬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 "𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤" for a step-by-step guide, and I'll share all the details with you via DM! 🛫📨⁣
⁣
𝗪𝐡𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠?: I first learned how easy the application process was via @travelletters_ ⁣
⁣
Then I found out that I could save 💸💸💸 if I rerouted my flights to East Asia through HK. Plus, this is a new destination for me anyway, so win-win! 🏆⁣

Did you know Kenya had such stunning beaches? This is Diani Beach, located on the Kenyan Coast 😍😍

Easily doable as a weekend trip, but better to stay longer 🤍

Japan peak travel season is here! 🌸 Everyone on your travel TL is about to be in Japan! 🤭

Just in case you're planning your own trip and it's starting to get a little overwhelming 🥹, here's a quick framework to help!

1. There are lots of castles, temples, shrines, etc. in Japan. Some cities even have all the groups listed above. You can tailor your itinerary to have a mix of popular destinations and lesser known places.

2. There's a lot to see and do in Japan! Just accept that you can not possibly see and do everything in a single short-term trip. Prioritise your list of places and make the best use of your time. ⏰️

3. Missing in the list on the video: a fun train ride (could be a ride on shinkansen, a limited express train with great views and scenery, or a themed carriage).🚆 But don't forget about buses - especially if you're on a budget. They're often times a cheaper alternative, and sometimes, the journey time is practically the same.

4. Visiting the major cities is nice - especially for first-time travellers to the country, but as these places grapple with the effects of overtourism, it'll be great to explore lesser visited places, too.

5. I'll always recommend the overnight trip, rather than a day trip if you're keen on exploring places without the crowd.

Are you heading to Japan soon, or is it on your travel wishlist?

A delicious stop in Diani @nomadbeachbar 🦀

I tried the crab samosas, spaghetti bolognese & stracciatella ice cream, and I rate them a 10/10 👌🏽 I'm quite ready to revisit Diani the crab samosas alone!

The moctails and a fish skewer dish I tried get a 7/10 rating. Overall, it's a great place to dine at when in Diani.
