Places & Faces: Dada Pottery, Ilorin

Kwara State is nicknamed the ‘State of Harmony’. It was easy to see why during my visit with Unravelling Nigeria last October. As I already mentioned in the second part of that series, I found the people of Kwara to be one of the friendliest set of people I have ever met in all my travels within Nigeria.

Everyone, from the hotel staff to the Oba and his chiefs at the palace; from the staff who worked at the Unilorin zoo gate to Dada Community and to Esie Museum, every single person we met welcomed us with a smile and so much warmth.

Ilorin Children NigeriaOne of our stops during the trip was Dada Pottery, an all-female run enterprise in the heart of the city of Ilorin. Here, we learned about the craft of pottery making – one that is said to be as old as the city itself. We also learned about how this craft is passed on from one generation to the next…

Kwara Dada Pottery

I enjoyed visiting and documenting the entire process. These are some of the results of our little photo session. I hope you enjoy viewing these images as much as I did taking them…

Chaos where?! 👀

I just spent THE MOST RELAXING 7 days in The Pearl of Africa - Uganda 🇺🇬 and it has been one of my most soothing trips to date!

First, as a Kenyan Resident, I was happy to receive discounted offers from lodges that would typically be outside my budget and was also lucky to be hosted by my work mama in Kampala. 🥹 - my accommodations were trip highlights for sure!

Kampala traffic? 🏍💨 Never met her! This one shocked me the most because I had heard so much about it and braced myself for the worst. To my delight, I experienced none of this!

Weather in September? 🍃 perfect! It rained 4 times during my 7-day, but only for short bursts of time. I was still able to do everything I set out to do!

There's plenty I did not see and do in Uganda, so I certainly look forward to returning someday! 💗

In the meantime, catch up with stories on my page - I'll be sharing them soon and let me know if you have visited!

Everytime I looked up things to do in Kampala and Entebbe, I saw results filled with a lot of movements - oftentimes chaotic, with traffic. 🚙🏍

I wanted calm and serenity 🍃 and knew there just had to be somewhere in these cities where I could find that.

And that's how I stumbled upon Entebbe Forest Lodge - an oasis in the midst of a very busy city. Situated only 30mins away from the international airport, this lodge was a great introduction to Uganda 🇺🇬

It is located in the middle of a forest, right on the banks of Lake Victoria. The perfect place to begin or end your trip in Uganda.

Views you can't beat! This is the Standard Guage Rail (SGR) in Kenya 🇰🇪. It is a rail service that goes from Nairobi to Mombasa (and vice versa) with several stops along the way!

The total time is about 6 hours but if you look outside the window during your ride, you will see several wildlife just living wild and free!

Possible sightings include zebras, warthogs, gazelles, impalas, giraffes and in my opinion, the star of the show - elephants! 🐘🦓🦒

It is such an exciting activity to spot them while on board! And if you have the chance to choose your seats, pick the left side of the train when travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa (i.e. even numbered seats when travelling in Premium Class).

You start to see elephants as you approach Voi and Miasenyi Stations. ✨️
